My experience with colour is solely based on my own experiments. I love colorful lettering like that of Paul Klee, which inspired me to delve deeper into colour myself.

Of course I will start off with the basics of monoline lettering; pressure/release, rhythms, built-up with mechanical pencil, fineliner, Speedball, pointed nib, fountain pen, color-pencil and so on. Then I will move forward with different layouts in colour. There will be a focus on built-up lettering with colour, as well as filling up negative spaces.

Another challenge will be to work big, which triggers a different set of rules and thoughts when drawing letters, as we are forced to look at more detail. We will even explore typography to some extent, and that will improve our understanding of ‘normal’ sized lettering. I must refer to Elmo van Slingerland, with whom I had the honour to team teach at Cheerio in 2019. He changed my general look at letter drawing.
