This workshop introduces you to the art of ornamental mandala drawing, where precise geometry forms
Mandalas can look intimidating, all those perfect circles and tiny details, but they're built from simple steps, and anyone can learn them. Over three live online lessons, I will take you from a blank page to three finished mandalas you'll genuinely want to frame.
This workshop is for beginners and anyone who's tried mandalas before but wants to make them feel more balanced, intentional, and beautifully detailed. You don't need any prior drawing experience, just a pen, paper, and a little patience.
In each session, we'll create one complete mandala together, along with the individual elements that go into it. This way, by the end of the workshop you'll have drawn three full mandalas, practised all the building blocks behind them, and built a real understanding of how mandalas come together, not just followed along, but actually learned the craft.
Lesson 1 - Getting the Grid Right
Every good mandala starts with a strong grid. In this first lesson, we'll talk briefly about where mandalas come from and why their symmetry feels so satisfying to draw. Then we'll get straight into the practical side, the tools you'll need, how to hold your pen for clean lines, and how to build accurate circles, divisions, and rings. You'll practise the foundational elements that sit inside a grid, and together we'll complete your first mandala by the end of the session.
Lesson 2 - Adding the Ornaments
This is where your mandala starts coming alive. You'll learn a library of ornamental shapes, petals, lotus forms, scrolls, acanthus-inspired leaves, and floral fillers, and how to place them so the whole design feels balanced rather than crowded. We'll cover how to choose a strong centre, how to build outward in layers, and how to keep rhythm and spacing working in your favour. You'll practise each element on its own first, then bring them together into your second complete mandala.
Lesson 3 - Detailing and Your Final Mandala
In the final lesson, we'll bring everything together. You'll learn how to vary line weight, add depth, and finish your piece with the small details that make ornamental work feel elegant rather than busy. We'll practise these detailing techniques element by element, then apply them to your third and most refined mandala. You'll leave the workshop with three completed mandalas and, more valuable, a method you can use to design your own mandalas again and again.
