Workshop Description

I have been attracted to the beauty of each stroke of Roman letters and the unique textures that result from writing texts with Roman letters. The textures we calligraphers make with strokes and marks have specific characters. The order of strokes and marks to form letters and writing text with the order is a very systematic process. And we all express our feelings into the process. There are many different ways to make calligraphic textures. Writing blocks of traditional letterforms in good spacing or lines of handwriting can be beautiful textures. Keep that in mind, we will experiment creating illegible textures that viewers can feel first, not read or understand. In this workshop, every exercise will be presented in order, but mistakes are welcome and they may bring to us something new to experiment! Day 1-2: For making pleasant calligraphic textures on our eyes, we start from basic texture making exercises with monoline letterforms. Then we add weight on those textures with different writing tools and different objects in various ways. Day 2-3: For making unique and expressive textures, we create variations of monoline letterforms, and choose one that suits the meaning of individuals' chosen text. We develop our own alphabet and make textures with them. We also work on different speeds, rhythms and movements while we make textures. Day 4: For making effective textures and calligraphic pieces, study of layering, value, color, mediums, basic design layout and composition will be presented. At the end of the workshop, we will bind all exercises sheets in a book format. ** This workshop is open to all students and recording will be available after class for 30 days via Zoom **
