Workshop Description
Edward Johnston (1872-1944), known as the father of modern calligraphy, developed Gothicized Italic in the mid-1920s and originally referred to this script as “Compressed Hand” and “Heavy Italic”. This script is based on a compressed and pointed parent oval form and can be written upright or with a slight slope. Johnston combined advantageous elements of Blackletter and Italic – compactness and fluidity, respectively – to create this vigorous and lively script. ** This workshop is open to all students and recording will be available after class for 30 days via Zoom **
