Workshop Description

Have you ever wondered why your attempts at medieval calligraphy lacked that elusive "look" of the ancient originals? Learning and utilizing an authentic medieval hand might just solve your issues. Join us for 3 lessons of intriguing and enjoyable information as we draw from a lost art form from centuries past. In this workshop, we will learn to write an authentic medieval hand (gothic textualis). We will examine the details and characteristics that define this ancient text, and will learn how to incorporate them in our own unique pieces of calligraphy. We will delve into some fascinating aspects and history of this significant style. After learning to write the textualis alphabet, we will learn about simple Gothic/Lombardic capitals, and how they are incorporated with the textualis hand. Lastly, we will learn how to write our own little medieval-style "piece", which will incorporate a simple Gothic Versal letter.
