Workshop Description

The workshop focuses on the vertical broad pen lettering style called French Round Hand. This lettering style was used extensively in France and Germany in the 1700 and 1800’s. This is an easy-to-read text lettering style. Engrossers in the United States used French Round Hand in resolutions, memorials and other hand lettered documents to add special emphasis to important lines of text. The first lesson will concentrate on the lower-case letters, covering both the basic letter shape and alternatives that can be used. Having several styles for the lower-case letters can add creativity to the calligrapher’s tool case. The second lesson will cover the capital letters and their variations. At the end of the class, examples will be shown using this style form the Ziller Archives.
