Workshop Description
This class takes a loving look at the fascinating printed and hand drawn initials from the early 1800’s to the 1920’s. The Victorians had a passion for ornamental lettering and decorative type designs that embellished their paper surfaces. These display initials take on many different shapes and forms. Taking our cues from early Valentine cards, ephemera, scraps, trade cards and sheet music we will draw and flourish our own intricate letter designs. During this two session class, we will work with graphite, ballpoint pen, dip pens and watercolours as we learn the secrets behind these versatile letters. Rustic, Branching, or Living Letters will be explored in our first session. We will use a sketching technique to capture their essence before refining the forms. Session two will explore Floral Overlays and Decorative Letters which utilize shadows, inline patterning, outlines, pen drawn filigree and cascading scrollwork. We will be working in muted monochromatic colour schemes but once the techniques are learned, these designs can be coloured or embellished in many ways. Final letter designs will be suitable for framing or can augment your calligraphic work. Discover the nostalgic romance of these Faded Love Letters. All skill levels are welcome.
