Workshop Description

Hermann Kilian (1929 – 2004) was a German calligrapher, typographer and book designer whose work was epitomized by classical simplicity with an underlying tension within every letter. I first saw his original work in 2016 at the Klingspor Museum Offenbach, and found his works to be full of life. As I progressed in my study, his original letterforms and works became my spiritual nourishment. To draw capital letters successfully, understanding the skeleton geometry form and the contrast of thick and thin strokes of Roman Capitals are very important. In this workshop, we will start by drawing skeleton forms to understand the form, space and balance. We will study how weights were added on the form in a traditional way. Then we will analyze some of Kilian's unique letterforms and design, and figure out how he drew his letters and composed his works. I will share all my studies of forms, design/layout tools and mediums, and at the end of course, we will draw our chosen quote with unique drawn/built-up capital letters.
