Workshop Description

For beginners as well as more advanced students, this class offers a detailed introduction to Textura, the form of Gothic (or Black Letter) calligraphy so effectively used in many medieval illuminated manuscripts. Textura originated in Northern Europe and was used in writing centers throughout Western Europe from the 12th century well into the 16th. It was the basis of the earliest typefaces, one of the first examples of which is the Gutenberg Bible, published in 1455. In this class we will concentrate on the minuscules -- simple, vertical forms that create a pleasing texture on the page and contrast well with other, more ornate scripts. Note: Upcoming Historical Hands workshops include Rotunda (15th -- 16th century Southern European Gothic), and a special class devoted to Black Letter Capitals. pointed pen will be our focus for this workshop. We will begin our study working with monoline forms, then use the pointed pen. We will look at variations and how to achieve details while reducing the x-height of our letters. The roman hand is a long time love of mine. I have gravitated to the Roman hands minuscule as well as majuscule for their versatility and elegance. As I often work with small letterforms, the pointed pen is the tool that helps provide the refinement and elegance I am looking for. I’m excited share with you the delight in creating these delicate and charming letterforms.
