Retouched Old English

With Vivian Mungall

Starting date: 7 February 2026

Fees: HK$1,000 or US$130

Workshop Description

Ruled (or Retouched) Old English was one of the most widely used lettering styles in the United States, especially favored by professional engrossers—calligraphers who specialized in creating elegant, final versions of important documents. From diplomas, resolutions, and certificates to testimonials, signs, and decorative work, Old English has long been chosen when a beautiful, dignified hand is desired.

In this class, students will learn the foundations of Old English through careful study of its structure. By comparing its letterforms to the Roman alphabet, you will see how Roman design influenced Old English. The broad pen is held at slightly less than a 45-degree angle with an emphasis on straight strokes to give the style its strength and clarity.

Old English is celebrated for its commanding appearance and refined elegance. It bridges the precision of printed type with the subtle variations of the human hand, resulting in lettering that feels both formal and alive. Through guided practice, students will develop technical control, an understanding of historical context, and the ability to create lettering suited for ceremonial and decorative work.

Whether used for formal documents or artistic lettering, Old English remains one of the most striking and rewarding hands to study—and a cornerstone of traditional calligraphy.
