The addition of flourishes to a page or a line of Copperplate, or even a single letter, adds an individual decorative quality to the alphabet. Through a series of pencil exercises and simple drawing techniques, students are introduced to some of the basic forms and patterns of 18th century Copperplate flourishes and cartouches. We will learn when and where flourishing is appropriate and the steps for designing a flourished piece of calligraphy. This class is for students who have a basic knowledge of Copperplate. Some experience with Copperplate variations is helpful but not essential. By limiting class size to 10, students will benefit from one-on-one contact with Eleanor: correcting work, answering questions and guiding in-class learning.
