Mythical Beasts, inspired by the Medieval Bestiaries

By Tim Noad

Starting Date : 19 Nov 2022

Fees : HK$ 860 or US$ 110

Workshop Description

Medieval Bestiaries, or ‘Books of Beasts’ provide a wonderful source of inspiration for illuminated designs. Bestiaries were manuscripts combining colourful illustrations of both real and mythical animals with information about their appearance and habits. Many were produced, particularly in England and France in the Twelfth and Thirteenth centuries.

This short course of three lessons will introduce techniques of design, painting and illumination, using both traditional and modern techniques. You will be able to make your own illumination of an animal, either based on a template design or from your own inspiration.

The class will take place in three lessons on consecutive Saturdays.

Lesson 1 will introduce the subject of bestiary illuminations and show how to design and draw out your own animal illustration. We will also make gesso in preparation for gilding in lesson 2.

Lesson 2 will show how to apply gesso and gold leaf for gilding your illuminated design, then how to paint the flat colours.

Lesson 3 will complete the miniature with painting techniques including shading, highlighting and outlining.
