Master Class - Soaring Higher Enrichment
With Heather Held
Starting Date : 29 Oct 2023
Fees : HK$ 1,170 or US$ 150
Workshop Description
The Flights of Fancy Master Class had so much packed into it, but I felt there were areas where
we could take a deeper dive. I wanted to offer some enrichment lessons where we could expand our skills in gilding, letter design, and borders. We will have weekly demo lessons where you can work on techniques before putting together one project for a feedback session. If you want to dig a little deeper this year, I would love to continue working with you through these enrichment lessons. You will need the same supplies that you had for the Flights of Fancy course and a few specialty materials if you want to follow along with me in the demo lessons.
Lesson 1 : Still pinning Gold
In this lesson, I will demo my method for making shell gold. We will also look at illusionistic background techniques for metallic gold as well as alternate metals like palladium, platinum, and copper. These alternate metallic techniques can enhance your current gilding skills as well as add different colours of metal leaf throughout your designs.
Specialty supplies For Session One :
Making Shell Gold: 23K loose gold leaf. (Transfer gold will not work.) You will need at least 5 sheets of loose gold if you want to try this. You will also need either a small amount of honey or a brand-new bottle of liquid gum Arabic. If you gum Arabic has turned a dark brown colour, it will not be suitable. The gum Arabic should be the colour of a very light honey. You will also need a shallow dish to grind the loose gold leaf and a small porcelain container to transfer your shell gold to when we are finished.
Optional Supplies :
Copper Leaf, Palladium or Platinum Leaf. You can wait to order these supplies unFl aVer you have watched the demo.
Lesson 2 : Intriguing Initials
We will gather insights from some of the intricate techniques used in Sangorski letter designs. These inlay techniques can add another layer to your Lombardic letter forms and help you to create beautifully inspiring initials. The demo lesson will focus on the painting techniques for these letters. I will use watercolour for the demo along with white gouache, a fine detail brush, and the pointed pen.
Lesson 3 : Borders and Beyond
William Morris will be our main guide into the border designs explored in this class. But we will also be looking at filigree infill designs to help augment the borders and create a sense of balance on illuminated pages. I will use watercolour for the demo portion of the class along with white gouache. After the three demo sessions, the students will be encouraged to create finished piece that explores any of the demo techniques from the enrichment sessions. We will meet in session four for feedback. Sufficient time will be
given after lesson three to complete your final piece.
Lesson 4 : Wrap up lesson Critique
Students will be encouraged to either intricate initial, beautiful border or an illuminated page as their final project.
