Italic Master Class

With Eleanor Winters

Starting Date : 1 Jul 2023

Fees : HK$ 5,850 or US$ 750

Workshop Description

For students with Italic experience, this Master Class will help you increase your understanding of "the handwriting of the Renaissance" and develop your calligraphic skills in new and challenging directions.

Italic is an especially versatile alphabet that functions equally well large and small, simple and flourished, in black and in color, It can be sober and restrained or playful and lively, and can express the personality of the scribe as well as the content of the text.

A combination of specific assignments and individual projects will enable participants to find their own direction. We will explore many of the following areas of study :

  • Variations in form and weight of the minuscule alphabet

  • Variations in the traditional Italic proportions in bold and experimental ways

  • Decorative vs Simple capitals

  • Informal cursive Italic in order to develop a personal "Italic handwriting"

  • Detailed study and analysis of classical Renaissance examples

Based on these and other areas of study, students will create personal artwork and participate in interactive critique sessions.

This Master Class will meet 12 times - six full-class sessions and six smaller critique sessions. We strongly encourage students to attend each session "in person", i.e., join the online meeting rather than watching the video recording. The recordings will be available after each session for review and study, but live participation will afford students a more meaningful and, hopefully, more satisfying experience.
