Introduction to Copperplate (Minuscules)

Join Nina in learning Copperplate -- a pointed-pen script that continues to be a favorite among calligraphers for its beautiful, elegant, and timeless letter forms.

In this beginner-friendly workshop, you will learn all you need to know about embarking on your pointed-pen journey and learning the Copperplate minuscule letters stroke by stroke.  From Nina's experience, the best way to learn is to roll up your sleeves and dive right in!

Session 1 - Basics, Basic, Basics

• Materials

• Writing zone

• Rules of Copperplate

• Nib anatomy

• Essential tine movement

• Parent forms and basic strokes

• Spacing and rhythmic exercises

Session 2 - Drills & Letters

• Consistency drill exercises

• Minuscule ductus

• Letter details

• How to critique your own work

Session 3 - Letters

• Letter groups

• Joining letters

• Spacing

• Letter chains

Session 4 - Words

• Writing text

• Word spacing

• Developing a regular practice

• Simple variations

Homework

After each Sunday's session, a 1-page homework assignment is assigned.  Students have the option to submit this assignment by the following Wednesday for critique.  Depending on the volume of submitted assignments, critiqued homework is usually returned before the next session.

Office Hours

On Thursdays, a bonus 30-minute Q&A session.  During this time, Nina will address any questions or issues that you may have had during practice.

Note to Students

•  This is a live online workshop via Zoom (please make sure you have a Zoom account to access the workshop)

• All live sessions will be recorded and available for 60 days following the final class.

• All recordings expires on Sunday, 02 April, 2023 at 12:00 pm Hong Kong Standard Time.

• Student can submit homework to the discussion corner for Nina to critique.
