Workshop Description

This course plan covers the history, design, and practical techniques of Ottoman illumination art, with a specific focus on the Åžah Kulu and saz yolu styles.

​

Åžah Kulu: A renowned Ottoman court artist, particularly influential in the 16th century. He was a master of Saz-style decoration and worked in the court of Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent.

​

Saz Yolu (Saz Style): A fluid, dynamic decorative style featuring curved leaves, lotus flowers, composite blossoms, and stylized dragons, birds or mythical creatures. It was inspired by Central Asian influences but became a signature element of Ottoman design.

Historical Context

​

  • Examination of the 16th-century Ottoman Empire Art Style.

  • Introduction to the contributions of Åžah Kulu to illumination art.

Key Motifs and Styles

​

  • Detailed study of Åžah Kulu’s style and its characteristics.

  • Introduction to the saz yolu style, focusing on its motifs and patterns.

​

Analyzing Motifs and Patterns

​

  • In-depth analysis of common motifs found in Åžah Kulu’s work.

  • Detailed examination and analysis of saz yolu motifs.

  • Practical exercises on sketching basic motifs from both styles.

Design Principles

​

  • Introduction to design principles in illumination art, including symmetry, balance, and harmony.

  • Peer review and feedback sessions on initial design drafts.

​

Brush Techniques and Painting Methods

​

  • Introduction to traditional brush techniques used in Ottoman illumination including Halkari technique painting and nuanced outlining.

  • Demonstration and practice of basic brush strokes.

  • Guided practice on painting the prepared designs with a focus on color application, shading, and detailing.

  • Tips and techniques for adding final details and enhancing the illumination.​
