Among the most popular calligraphic hands, Gothicized Italic is a contemporary (20th century) form of Black Letter, or Gothic calligraphy.  It was designed by Edward Johnston, who referred to it as "Black Italic."  A powerful, yet graceful and elegant variation on medieval Black Letter hands, Gothicized Italic combines the grace and rhythm of Italic with the density and ornamental qualities of the Gothic.  In this class, students will learn the basics of this lively minuscule script, with an emphasis on consistency of form and spacing. This is a class for students with experience using the broad-edge pen. By limiting class size to 10, students will benefit from one-on-one contact with Eleanor: correcting work, answering questions and guiding in-class learning.
