Copperplate Winter School - Part 3 - Variations in Letterforms
With Eleanor Winters
Starting date: 5 November 2025
Fees : HK$ 780 or US$ 100
Workshop Description
Back by popular demand – A new approach to the study of Copperplate!
Based on the success of our July / August Copperplate Summer School, we are continuing our Copperplate program by offering five individual workshops, covering a number of intermediate level subjects. Starting with a thorough review of the hand (Copperplate Brush-Up), and continuing with two workshops covering Letter Variations, focusing on size, weight, proportion and form, we will then offer an Introduction to Flourishing and Copperplate Layout and Design.
As we did in our Copperplate Summer School, we are offering these classes both as a five-part sequence and as individual workshops, an opportunity for students to choose the subjects they desire to focus on. This format has the advantage of being both a thorough, ongoing program, and a chance to work with your busy schedule and “drop in” to study at your convenience.
A two-week break between workshops will allow time for practice and individual critique, for those interested in sending their Copperplate practice work to the instructor.
Please note: These workshops require basic experience with the pointed pen and the Copperplate alphabet. Advanced beginners are welcome as are intermediate and advanced students.

There is a wide range of Copperplate letters beyond the basic 26 letters. In this workshop we will experiment with both simpler and more ornate versions of the Copperplate alphabet, to create new and exciting letter variations. We will learn when these letter variations are appropriate and how they can affect the texture of a piece of writing as well as the impact of the words.
