Once the basics of this distinctive hand have been learned the next step is to expand our ideas of what Copperplate should look like. Students will decide between keeping those things which are characteristic of a traditional Copperplate and pushing the limits of how much they can change shape, slant, spacing, size, proportion, weight and texture and still retain a Copperplate look. Further experimentation will include variations of the capitals, ascenders and descenders, flourishing and working with non-traditional layouts, materials and techniques.
