Advanced Engrossing Techniques

With Michael Sull

Starting Date : 1 Jul 2023

Fees : HK$ 1,500 or US$ 190

Workshop Description

“Engrossing” is a magical word and a fascinating field for those who practice its combinations of art and design. Simply explained, Engrossing is the art of acknowledging significant persons, organizations, or events by creating an artistic text of recognition to commemorate worthy achievement, and memorialize the lives of individuals who have passed away. The wonderful part of Engrossing is the wide variety of artistic techniques the lettering artist can select from and use to express their own creativity in designing, planning, and producing the engrossed certificate. Student can use several different alphabets for the text portion of the document, and then work with numerous decorative techniques to make the finished composition a beautiful and most meaningful work of art.

There are many instructional texts available that offer excellent guidance for learning every alphabet imaginable. In contrast, however, there are few publications that teach the decorative techniques of 19th and early 20th century American Engrossing, and this is what our Zoom program is all about. Student will not be spending instruction time on any alphabet style. Student will be focusing entirely on the seldom taught decorative subjects of creating Acanthus leaf design for borders; delicate filigree work; banners, ribbons, and scrolls; decorative line work; gilding with 23 kt. gold leaf; watercolor washes; and off-hand flourishing patterns. This live online workshop will be a rare treat for all students who will have the opportunity to study highly worthy engrossed certificates from the past and present. Handouts will be extensive; no prior skills are required, although a beginner’s level of familiarity with the oblique penholder will be helpful. A brief description of each lesson as follows :

Lesson 1 - What is an Engrosser and responsibilities of an Engrosser

> Purpose and Function

> Required Skill Set explained

> Layout and Design - the biggest step

> Elements of the layout

> Layout designs

> Process of creating the layout

> Tools and supplies

> What you must have and should have or may have

Lesson 2 - Tools of an Engrosser and familiarity of the engrosser's tools

> Doing engrossing work can (and usually does) involve the use of a variety of tools. Michael believe it is

beneficial to explain and demonstrate them at one time rather than bit by bit as the work requires. In this manner all students can practice with them as Michael explains their use.

Lesson 3 - Off-Hand Flourishing

> Off-Hand Flourishing patterns and their use: cartouche, quills, scrolls, plume. This is not a complete workshop level program on Flourishing, but rather an introductory-level session on the patterns most useful for the engrossing artist. Regarding to this workshop program, Michael will use off-hand flourishing in all of his certificate designs since is an important part of an Engrosser’s skill set.

Lesson 4 - Acanthus Leaves, Filigree, Decorative line work

> A detailed explanation and demonstration of drawing Acanthus leaves, filigree and line work as is used in border and space-filling treatments.

Lesson 5 - Gilding with Gold Leaf

> Learning application of raised gold leaf in an easy manner without toxic ingredients. Please note: due to the expense of these materials, students may wish to view Michael's presentation first before deciding to

purchase the Gold leaf, Instacoll, gesso, and artist’s brushes.

Lesson 6 - Watercolor Washes

> Learning the techniques of applying watercolor over and around lettering on certificate artwork. This is a very old and classic technique that was used by the best engrossing masters. The application of watercolor adds color, dimension, and beauty to the finished composition.
