Advanced American Cursive

With Michael Sull

Starting date: 9 November 2025

Fees : HK$ 1,170 or US$ 150

Workshop Description

IN THIS PROGRAM, we will take traditional American Cursive Handwriting to new, creative levels—adding a spirit of fun, excitement, artistic flair, and a touch of challenge for both the writer and the reader. This experience is truly enjoyable for those who are passionate about handwriting, transforming penmanship from the ordinary into a unique and expressive form of personal communication.

Our foundational style is American Cursive Handwriting, and for clarity, a brief explanation follows:

American Cursive Handwriting is rooted in the traditional method known as the Palmer Method, which was popular in the early decades of the 20th century. The primary differences between the two are:

  • The Palmer Method emphasized speed—writing quickly using whole-arm movement, where pen motion originates from the shoulder.

  • In American Cursive Handwriting, there is no rush. Writers are encouraged to write at a comfortable, spontaneous pace using combination muscular movement, which involves the fingers, wrist, and forearm. This approach offers greater control and flexibility, making it easier to create elegant curves, flourishes, and ornamental letterforms.

In this program, we will go far beyond the average use and style of traditional handwriting. In addition to enhancing your writing with advanced capital and lowercase forms and added flourishes, you’ll be introduced to playful and imaginative techniques such as:

  • Display Writing

  • Relay Writing

  • Baseline Writing

  • Backwards Writing

  • Connected Writing

  • Composition Writing

  • Rainbow Writing

  • Puzzle Writing

Personally, one of the greatest joys I find in penmanship is writing letters to students, family, and friends using these creative methods. These letters are never rushed; they’re written at a relaxed pace—and the reaction of the recipient is always delightful. Your writing will be clear and consistent in spelling, slant, and spacing, but also unmistakably unique. The reader will instantly recognize it came from no one else but you.
